Susannah’s Inspiration: Duncan Simmons
Every artist can point to something that inspires him or her. For Susannah Virginia Griffin, one source of her inspiration comes from the man who first taught her to paint: her father.
Duncan Simmons is a hyper-realist and watercolorist who attended the Houston Museum of Fine Art’s Glassell School of art just like Susannah did. He has been painting in watercolors since 1996, but has worked with acrylic paint for over four decades.
Simmons has won numerous awards for his artwork over the years, and you may have seen some of his paintings at the University of Texas, the Memorial Hermann Hospital system, and many other private companies. He has been a member of the Art League of Houston for many years, and is also involved with several watercolor societies across the U.S. More recently, Simmons has collaborated on a number of projects with artist Keiko Yasuoka.
Given Duncan Simmons’ success, it’s not surprising that Susannah grew up to become an accomplished artist in her own right. After all, plenty of people follow in the footsteps of their fathers when it comes to vocations and/or passions.
However, Susannah has spent many years on her own teaching herself many different artistic techniques, including Abstract expressionism, Modern impressionism, and Realism. So most of what you will see in her paintings was developed as a result of her own artistic journeys. Also, Susannah has shown a talent for iPhone photography – something which Simmons never had the opportunity to embrace in his younger days!
So while Duncan Simmons may be one basis of Susannah’s inspiration, it certainly isn’t the only one. If you browse herwebsite, you’ll learn more about what inspired her to create the various works of art you see there. Perhaps you may even discover where your own inspiration comes from throughout your day-to-day life.

I purchased a copy of Death of a Rainforest from Duncan when we worked together in the 90’s. Loved it. Now time to sell. No idea of value but is that something you could assist with? Thank you.
