One day I was watching the news, and the journalist was reporting on “racism among our youth”. And in this segment, the reporter had actually gone to the school, and was showing each child a picture of two children, each of different color, on a swing, and one child was on the ground beside the swing, and the other was standing. And this reporter was asking the children to give a scenario of what happened, to point out how children view racism. Well, that gave me an idea. I thought to myself…”I wonder what I would look like if I was a black/brown woman? How would I see myself? SO, I painted me brown, and this is how I see myself……I would be SO DISCO! And, I think this is a much better way to work with children too…….have them draw/paint their self as a person of another color. I think children would enjoy that, and it would teach empathy and compassion…..and admiration.
